For more than a dozen years now, Labor Day weekend hasn't brought up thoughts of trips to the lake or a final summer barbeque with the family. It's meant prepping for a long day of "work." I put the word in quotes because, truth be told, it's a day that flies by and is really a lot of fun!
Of course, I'm talking about the MDA Labor Day Telethon that I've enjoyed hosting first with David Oliver and now with Ralph Hipp. We like to call it our Labor Day labor of love. The past few weeks, though, Ralph and I have been looking at each other asking, "What are we going to do on Labor Day this year?!" For the first time in years, our Monday will actually be free because the telethon will air from 6pm to Midnight, Sunday, Sept. 4th! MDA is making the change to channel energies into a focused broadcast, jam-packed with entertainment. Just today, I received a note that reveals plans for the finale - a patriotic tribute involving more than a hundred performers! Earlier in the night, you'll hear Celine Dion, Darius Rucker, Martina McBride, Lady Antebellum and more.
Sunday's telethon will be followed by Tuesday's Big Dream Gathering. It's from 6 to 9 pm at the Ramada (learn more at www.bigdreamkansas.com). It's not too tough to link these two events. For hundreds of families in northeast Kansas, it's their "big dream" to find a cure for neuromuscular diseases. Going down the questions on the Big Dream Gathering "Dream Sheets," what do they have in place? An army of volunteers and researchers ready to assist and search for answers. What do they need? The support of all of you.
We hope to hear from you between 6 pm and midnight Sunday. You can call in or you can drop off donations in person at the Beverly Bernardi Dance Studio on 17th west of Wanamaker. Then, Tuesday, see what help is out there to make YOUR big dreams true! I'd love to see you at the Big Dream Gathering.
