Just picked up a DVD of "The Hurt Locker" to watch last weekend, and paid about $17 bucks for it, since it usually costs more than that to actually go to the movies.  And the rentals to watch it four times are about that much.

Enjoyed it very much.  As fans have reported, the "Hurt Locker" is based on real war experiences in Baghdad, and looks every bit as realistic as a film.

Have you seen it yet?  What did you think of it?  Did you think their bomb defusing superman, William James, is believable?  I'd like to read what you think about James' personality.. how many Iraq war veterans you've known are "addicted to war" and can't deal with life back home.. so much so that they have to sign up for another year-long tour of duty?

I never heard the words "hurt locker" mentioned in the movie.  Did I miss the phrase?  What does the "hurt locker" mean?

Above all, "The Hurt Locker" is a film that reminds us all of the immense sacrifices our fighting men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan are making for us.  Every day.   Ralph

While I enjoyed the theatrics of the movie, I found it to be totally unrealistic. As an Iraq Veteran, I know that these bomb techs don't just run around on their own like a bunch of cowboys providing security for themselves. Instead they have to rely on the infantry and other units to protect them while they work. Again, good movie if you check reality at the door.

Thanks for helping us do that, Jared

Apparently the "hurt locker" phrase arose out of the Vietnam War. The earliest use of it I could find was in a 1966 article that can be found online at http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=2WEwAAAAIBAJ&sjid=QOAFAAAAIBAJ&pg=893,4032279. In the article, the phrase was used to mean someone in the hurt locker was the same as a person "in a world of hurt," which means a bad situation. Personally, I enjoyed watching The Hurt Locker very much, though it left my stomach tied up in a knot because it was so intense. I particularly liked the ending. I have a cousin who voluntarily returned to Iraq for a second tour of duty, but I think his decision to go back -- rather than being due to any addiction to war -- was based on a commitment to the people he'd left behind and the feeling that they were his family.

Thanks, Tim.. I would go totally with that description, so it even goes back to Vietnam, huh?? rh
