If your child went missing, would you want police to first sit down and extensively question you, find out your psychological state, make sure he or she wasn't hiding under the bed, suggest perhaps you forgot you left the child at grandma's house? Or would you want them to get a description and immediately start searching for your son or daughter?

I would think most would say they wouldn't want any delay in starting a search.

It's why the nation held its collective breath as a foil balloon sailed over Colorado, and why I am upset by the allegation that the whole thing was a hoax in hopes of landing a reality television show.

The problem isn't just that the false reports tie up law enforcement when their time could be better spent elsewhere. Perhaps the greater damage comes in our reaction to reports of similar incidents later.

We want authorities to take reports of crimes and people who are missing or in danger seriously. Each time there is a false report, it's no wonder that, not just authorities, but all of us start to get jaded. We hear a report that a teenager has been abducted and we wonder if it really happened, or if the teen just ran away. We hear a claim of a sexual assault and we wonder if that's the whole story. Locally and nationally, there have been claims of both such incidents made falsely.

Unfortunately, in the past, there hasn't been much punishment for these false claims. I, for one, believe there should be some consequence because, right, the price is paid by those who experience hesitation when they truly are in need of help.

If it is found that it was a hoax, then the parents should pay rstitution of the wages spent. The helicoptors are expensive an dpolice wages add up. I am sure th epolice could have been elsewhere helping some one in need.

Fallout from Balloon Boy Hoax ? Funny title to the story considering they thought the kid might have fallen out of the balloon. There's way too many so called reality shows on TV making common ordinary people into millionaires mostly for no apparent reason. So, its no TV show for the balloon family, but just wait for the book deal. There's gold in them thar kids.

The boys should be removed from the home and raised by someone else. The parents really need help. The both of them are wacko. I feel sorry for the boys.

i have seen the couple twice on wife swap and already knew they are jerks. those poor boys have no idea what a normal life is.

I believe it should be a felony with possibility of a parole. If people were hurt or killed while searching, then jail time.

It was a hoax. Parents should pay a price due to this. What are they teaching these 3 boys? They give a bad reputation & so people get to where they don't want to help if someone is missing. Is anyone out looking for the 2 older people from Atchison? No coverage as to what has happened & who saw them last? Are they deceased off highway or river? Has other states been notified? Haven't heard a word about investigation but heard a LOT about Colorado idiots! Hope they have a hefty fine to pay. One child said it was for a Realty show - children never lie! Looks on parents' faces priceless. I hope people will continue to look for lost/missing persons & keep public in the know as to what is going on so we can continue to be on the watch for them. I feel for the family of the lost older people from Atchison with no coverage or any news on investigation as to trying to find them.

RESPONSE: We have done several updates on the Atchison couple. Just last night, our news put out their picture again, with Atchison authorities saying they had not new leads. A couple weeks ago, they put out a request for all rural landowners to check their property and any access points to be on the lookout for them. I agree - I feel for their family not knowing what happened.

If this truly was a hoax, then the parents should have to pay for the cost of the police and all the man hours spent looking for their so called lost child.

I heard this morning on radio that the father called the news media before calling any law enforcement....which leads me think that this was a hoax....
