I got a piece of 'fan mail' tonight asking why I (we) always report if a person had a helmet on or not in a motorcycle accident. It's a question I guess that always comes up in an interview with police in a motorcycle accident and is usually reported if it is a fatality or not. The person that was writing said that we shouldn't report helmets one way or another because there is no law that those driving/riding need to have a helmet on.
I come from a state where there is a mandatory helmet law. I am shocked that all states don't adopt such a policy for the safety of everyone on the road. I for one think that there should be a law requiring those on motorcycles and ATVs to wear a helmet. Of course the other argument is that people should be allowed to do what they want to do.
Thoughts?
