Tonight is the peak of the perseid meteor shower and I usually try to make an all night trip out to see it.  I love seeing things like auroras, meteors, eclipses, etc. and last year I was lucky enough to capture this image.

Tonight might be a little more difficult as it looks like we could have some clouds and maybe even a few t-storms across ne KS through the overnight hours.

Even so...I am going to head west in a little while to try and catch some meteors as they streak through the sky.  This is one of the few times of the year that I try to avoid clouds.  If you would like to see some perseids and would like a good light pollution free location I made this map of the central US to show where the good spots are.  In good, light free areas you will be able to see more than 60 meteors per hour!

You will definitely have to get out of the Topeka city limits to see anything good.

If your viewing area in the sky is covered with clouds tonight you can still catch a good show for a little more than a week as the shower subsides...tonight is just the peak.

Good Luck!

Darin
