Greenhorn Rookie NASCAR Racer Trevor Bayne celebrated his 20th birthday Saturday but had to be distracted by the fact he was about to challenge some of NASCAR's greats in his very first Daytona 500 Sunday. What chance did he think he had? As it turned out when the checkered flag dropped, a very good one! Trevor Bayne won the Daytona classic.. more than a million bucks, and experienced what it is truly like to have your wildest dream come true.
At age 20? Let's turn the clocks back (a long way for me, and some of us.. and not so far back for others..) to think about what we were doing in our lives when we hit "the big two-oh."
I was a junior in college at Florida, and just beginning a new task at the college radio station hosting my own two-hour talk show on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I had no idea if I was any good at it, had no coaching, no mentor, and no real guidelines on how to do a good program. It was extremely popular, and in addition to hosting a college football scoreboard show on Saturdays, had some lengthy time at the microphone three days a week over there.
I had just been named the station's outstanding radio announcer and even won the radio station's annual Red Barber Award from good ole Red, who had also worked at our station during his college days. Of course, baseball fans know Red was the announcer for the Brooklyn Dodgers in his days of fame, and his protege, Vin Scully is also a baseball play-by-play legend. So for having the chance to meet Red and earn his silver cup (which I still have..) I would rank that as the one good thing I was doing at 20. I can't recall much else that I thought I could do well!
Tell me your story! What are you doing now if you're 20? What amazing things did you accomplish at age 20 way back when? You know, young people these days have some amazing opportunities to shine in their later college years. No matter which decade brought you into your 20s, share your passion -- and if it's anything like the amazing story of Trevor Bayne -- who at 20, is already the best (for now) at what he does for a living.
