What Do You Love Most About Kansas?

By Ralph Hipp

Even though "we" are the parents, and "they" are our kids.. my wife and I envy our two children for one simple fact.

They are native Kansans.

They were both born during my early years with WIBW, and I think the years they've spent here as two more Kansas-born originals have built their character -- as it has with everyone who was born in the Sunflower State before them.

As we mark a big anniversary of statehood Saturday (I have a hard time calling it a birthday.  Actual people are born.  I'm not sure anyone can actually give birth to a state), it's a time to reflect on what we love most about our state that we're so proud of this weekend.  There are untold tales of the pioneering spirit, the heroism of Kansans' actions, the solid stock they come from.  And that's one of the things I still love the most about our state.  Its people.  I think one reason we've been able to stay here with our kids (we did move away, and came back) is the fine people who call this state their home, too.

I also love Kansas art, photography and inventive genius.  I love the Flint Hills and the scenery along the Bill Snyder Highway as you come into Manhattan.  I love the Wildcats, the Jayhawks, and the storied history of their athletics.  (Being originally from Florida, I didn't grow up bleeding crimson and blue, or Wildcat purple, and that's served me well working for 13 News!)

And I would love to hear from you, especially if you've always made Kansas your home.  Tell me what makes our 150-year old state so special for you, too.   Happy Kansas Day!    Ralph
