Taking the "Super" Out of Superpower

By Ralph Hipp

Remember the good old days not too long ago?  The Soviet Union crumbled and Communism fell from the weight of its own overburdened economy.  China was reeling from the repercussions of its anti-democracy protests at Tienanmen Square and answering loud calls against its human rights offenses.  Looking ahead.. a guy named Osama Bin Laden was probably only reading (or writing) terror training manuals.

The United States was "the" Superpower in the world, all on our own to control the free world.  So what happened?

Now the United States is, as some astute commentators pointed out recently, a country in rehab.. a nation recovering from its addiction to oil and paying the Saudis dearly for it.  A nation shaking as it goes "cold turkey" from its addiction to money and lots of it, and paying dearly to China as well, to keep its credit pipeline flowing.

Russia has raised its ugly "heads" with the dangerous duo: Vladimir Putin and his appointed President Medvedev.  Whether it's keeping the pot of unrest boiling in its former province of Georgia, or the stark fear their old scrapheap of nuclear warheads can be bought by terror organizations for any purpose it needs them for.. Russia has us looking down a hall of mirrors to find the real Russian reflection of what they are right now.

The U.S. has poured billions into Afghanistan and Pakistan, handed bundles of American cash allowing them to immobilize each other.  Now that practically every leader in those countries is skimming off American aid, they're probably finding ways to work together to bring the U.S. down a peg or two.  Thank goodness the United States is backing the efforts to include India as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.  Or is that necessarily a good thing?

Heck, the President is now viewed as a weak leader who doesn't know he wants, by members of his own party now in the wake of the tax cut/ unemployment benefits wars on Capitol Hill.  Yep, one of every ten of our fellow countrymen is still out of work.  Superpower?  Who's wearing the S on their cape these days?  I'd love to read your comments.    Ralph
