So Why Did Katie Take This Job?

From Ralph Hipp

Katie Couric is departing the CBS Evening News as I'm writing this on Thursday afternoon.  It seems like only yesterday when she announced to Matt Lauer she was leaving the Today Show.

"Oh, where are you going?" he replied.

CBS .. for a scant five years.  While Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather served for decades, Couric is ringing down her anchor career after a half-decade, and on David Letterman's "Late Show" when the cat came out of the bag under Dave's incisive questioning, Katie didn't really seem to care one way or the other about the concept that when you're the anchorperson of a newscast, you're supposed to kinda hang around for a while.

Melissa has worked here every day solid for 15 years, since her arrival in 1996.  I started on the 10:00pm newscast in April of 1990, left for exactly two years to the day, and was lucky enough to be able to come back to WIBW and move into the new building to continue anchoring since September of 2000.  So I am 11 years into my current stint, and I'm having the time of my life and career here.  With good luck and good fortune, the station will let both of us stay here as long as we would like to be here.  I am here to help people with causes that mean a lot to them, which is the why the 4:00 show is set up the way it is.  And we both share the common goal of informing you every night, and that is so important to Melissa and me as well.

Katie may have thought the CBS Evening News was the next higher level of a launching pad for her.  I will give her this, she is relentlessly ambitious.  Next step for Katie is a possible deal with ABC for appearances on "Good Morning America," and "20/20" for even more of a platform for documentary type reports instead of the daily anchor grind.  And ABC may take charge of the syndication of the afternoon one-hour talk show we're sure Couric would like to host.

But gosh, that CBS Evening News is the best anchor job there is.  So long, Katie, sorry you weren't interested in it.  But Scott Pelley is interested, and he will be excellent when he starts June 6th.  rh
