Miami's Marlin Mess

By Ralph Hipp

Ozzie Guillen, former hot-headed manager of the Chicago White Sox is in warmer climes managing the newly renamed Miami Marlins.  Guillen no sooner arrived for opening day, than he opened his mouth and made comments to the effect that "he loves Fidel Castro, and admires his ability to stay in power so long."

Ozzie, dude.

No one tells Cuban refugees who fled Castro's oppressive regime that they love him.  They either lived there in shock and shame the executions of Fidel and Raul Castro's rivals.. starving in the flat-line economy complete with a loss of freedom and opportunity.  Or newer, younger children of Cuban descent pray for relatives who cannot escape those conditions.

Guillen has apologized and said his remarks on Castro were "misinterpreted."

He's being suspended for four more days as I write this (a 5-day total on the suspension.)  But as the Marlins rename their team and move to a beautiful new stadium in the Little Havana section of Miami, the comments show a complete disregard for the front office.  Marlins management has spent millions to desperately lure Miami's huge Hispanic population into loving this team and coming out for ball games.

Since my opinion doesn't matter here in Topeka, I think the Marlins should have fired Guillen on the spot for wrecking their team-building strategy.. and allowing a man who claimed to love Fidel Castro to come back to the ballpark himself.  I'd appreciate your thoughts on this!   rh
