When the budgets for the city, county and state are this tight.. we need to listen to more than one leader at a time. When Larry Wilson announced that the White Lakes Annex is now officially shut down, that left car registrations, tax payments and transactions for property or motor vehicles to be completed at the courthouse only. I applaud Larry for stepping up, and showing some initiative for getting his workers out of the annex if it's unsafe.
Meantime, around 37th and Burlingame, Elections Commissioner Libby Ensley reminded county leaders, TV viewers and radio listeners that yes, it would be a good idea for her workers to have more space. Space for additional touch-screen voting machines would be nice. And she agrees, the Treasurer and Elections Office sharing a larger space somewhere else would be in their best interests.
My suggestion for Treasurer Wilson is to ask if the county would best be served by opening a new Motor Vehicles Annex in the Rossville-Silver Lake area. If you live there, would that be an enormous help to you there, and relieve the congestion of a single courthouse office for Wilson's crew? And if county commissioners agree that combining office space for tags, taxes and elections would be a significant cost-cutting improvement.. where would you like to see that? Farther south from White Lakes, farther away from downtown? Let's talk about some location changes, and I look forward to your creative ideas! RH
