Condolences for Christina

By Ralph Hipp

If only Christina Green could have imagined the praise that would be heaped on her, in her short nine-year life last night.  President Obama described the young girl, born on 9-11 and slain last Saturday, as an excellent ballet dancer and baseball player who wanted to be the first woman to play in the major leagues.  The President poignantly pointed out that "our democracy should be as good as Christina imagined it."

Christina was shot in the chest standing in line for a chance to meet Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.  Christina had just been elected to student council at her school, and a social worker/ neighbor invited Christina to come with her to the Safeway store to meet their area congresswoman.

And we hope Christina was spared seeing the horror of the heinous act that took her life, and the lives of five other people Saturday, including Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman, and Federal Judge John Roll.  President Obama also magnificently detailed the fine qualities of all those who lost their lives in the Congress on Your Corner event.

But in particular, what do we say to the Greens, including Christina's famous grandfather, former Major League baseball manager Dallas Green?  (Christina's father, John, is a scout of recruits for the Dodgers.)

Let's all join together in a Topeka condolence book to her family.

(I would also add Topekans are probably very grateful that Westboro Church picketers agreed late last night NOT to picket the funerals of any of the 6 victims who were slain.  Shirley Phelps-Roper was offered time on a national radio talk show to express their point of view in exchange for not picketing any of the six funerals.)

As a personal note, from Topeka to Tucscon it would be agreed: please don't judge our cities only from the acts of a madman, or the acts of a group of picketers.  Thank you for your condolences to Christina's family here!    Ralph
