Heard from Charlie Summers last night after returning from Fiesta, with Charlie's news that he suddenly resigned as the afternoon host on Majic 107.7, KMAJ and won't be returning from his recent vacation. He was probably not relaxing, he was probably worrying about his father's 2nd stroke suffered a few days ago. His dad's sudden turn for the worse, and the longterm implications of caring for an elderly parent, were what led to Charlie "signing off" for the final time this week. Charlie assured me, despite earlier problems on the job front from Cumulus with some of our other friends, like Rose.. and Rich and Louanne on US 103.. Charlie was not fired and was concerned some of his fans might think he was. The station manager wrote a very nice farewell for Charlie to the staff, by the way!
Charlie will be close by in Manhattan, helping run some family businesses over there on behalf of his father. He may dip his toe back into radio someday, but hasn't made that decision.
Summers has been heard on thousands of hours of radio, and hundreds of local commercials, and at least those commercials will still be on for a while. I enjoyed anchoring a brief radio newscast for Charlie's KMAJ show for a year or two before we switched our news over to KTPK last year.
Since Charlie's not going to be on in the afternoons anymore, I just wondered if you would like to say a few words (or write a few words) to Charlie on his departure. I've said my piece, how about yours? I know Charlie will appreciate it. Ralph
