Melissa is our best writer in the newsroom, hands down and she really knows how to get down the fine points of a complicated news story.. but when it comes to the headlines our reporters (which we show when they're standing by the wall or the monitor of our studio) I hope they know they can come to me as our top headline writer. Now headlines are a province normally reserved for newspapers, but we do use them on our website stories and for some of our news graphics. I like to be creative and describe the main point of their story in just five words. Come along and join me to try a little "headline writing" of your own.
Here's how it works. Let's say I need to write a headline for Topeka Transit asking the City Council for more funding, and how not getting that money would keep people from riding the busses. That headline would read:
Transit Talks, City Balks, Topeka Walks
See, we've got the whole story in one headline. Tell me which story you're writing about and write your headline here, on the city council, the state legislature, any story that interests you. Melissa and I are looking forward to reading your headline banners; show us how well you do it! Ralph
