This week's exciting Vancouver Olympics hockey games are in perfect sync with the Lake Placid Olympics of 1980.. do you believe in miracles? Can you believe it's been 30 years since the "Miracle on Ice?" It was 30 years ago Monday when the upstart American hockey team defeated the tough, veteran "unbeatable" Soviet hockey team, 4-3 in that game for the ages.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, will be three decades since the U.S. team led by guys like Jim Craig and Mike Eruzione defeated Finland to take home the Gold in those games.
As exciting as the games are now, with the women (coached by one of the members of the 1980 Gold Medal winning team) poised to head to the medal round.. and the men (fresh off their 5-3 win over Canada) inspired by the legacy of the 1980 victories, every one of those guys are stars and veterans in the NHL. That is another fact of life that separates the Miracle on Ice from any sports accomplishment that could be achieved today. I'd like to hear from you about whether the United States needs another miracle. And it doesn't have been from an athletic competition. Here's a nominee for you.. how about that miracle landing on the Hudson River 13 months ago by Captain Sully Sullenberger? And if the good ole USA needs another astounding miracle of grit, determination and patriotism, what kind of American miracle would you like to see? Think about it, and thanks! Ralph
