I'm anchoring our 9:00 newscast when "The Jay Leno Show" is on.. so I don't see him as much anymore. But I do see some of David Letterman and Conan O'Brien after the news is over. This renewed war over the "Tonight Show" franchise is even better than the last battle when Johnny Carson left!
Jay and Dave have been late night stars for decades.. (Letterman since 1982 on his NBC show, and Jay from the time Carson anointed Leno his official backup host.) Conan came on the scene in 1993 after Dave came over to CBS. But do you remember some of these other late night talk show hosts, who never really made the cut?
Joey Bishop; Joan Rivers; Chevy Chase; Pat Sajak; (even Merv Griffin on CBS); Dick Cavett (actually, he very much made his mark on late night TV); and I'm sure there are more if I could ever think of them.
Do you remember their shows, or like any of them a lot? Jay and Conan have nothing to be ashamed of. There are lots of late, great people who also didn't stay on very long, in the wild and wacky world of late night TV talk shows. Let me know some of your memories about those old shows if you have some! Ralph
