By Ralph Hipp   We have once again reached the busiest GROCERY SHOPPING day of the year.. two days before the biggest retail shopping day of the year.  Shopping for Christmas is one thing, but getting all the goodies for your Thanksgiving feast is another.  They require two different skill sets!  Take my wife's plan of grocery shopping (please).. she leaves and says "just going to the store" and that "she'll be back in an hour."  But the grocery shopping may lead her to new avenues or exciting aisles of new adventures in grocery shopping.  And with all these very fancy supermarket designs, who can blame her!   I don't know.. I am just not the kind of guy who can wander all through the store looking for something I haven't tried before, or something that's a great bargain.

I am what you might call a "hit and run" shopper.  If I know my way around that particular store (which I usually DON'T!) I plan a route which will get me directly from the soup, to the bread.. check the fresh produce, then it's over to the dreaded "freezing milk corner," gotta have my favorite cereal, followed by grabbing something I know we're out of, then to the register to talk with the nice clerk for a minute or two.

So what kind of grocery shopper are you?  A "hit and run" shopping machine, or someone with bare cupboards looking for an adventure?

Better hurry, time is running out before tomorrow!   Ralph

Ralph, I can't afford to waste time nor money, so as much as possible, I plan out some menus for the week -- at least get some ideas of meals to fix. I plan my grocery list around the menu. That way, I have what I need when I need it. It pays to plan my menu around the ads, using coupons I've collected to make it even more affordable. (Did you know you can program coupons into your shopping card? That way, it's possible to combine an ad price, a paper coupon, and a "loaded" coupon for a GREAT deal!) I rarely enter a store without checking out their bargain shelf if they have one. Items whose date is past are often in great condition for a much lower price, allowing me to bring home more for my buck! This all takes TIME, I admit, but it's time well spent. I feed a houseful (more than 5) on about $600 /mo. I gotta say, getting a great deal makes my day!
