J.B. is the only 13 News guy to play on a high school and collegiate team before he joined our anchor team. But I can well imagine sports, especially when it comes to winning or losing streaks, are surrounded by habits of superstition. How many of those athletes from high school to college, then the pros.. follow a ritual before they go out on the field? Now that Todd Haley and Trey Hillman are the guys running the teams in K.C.. they may have some other kind of superstitious thing they'd like to do keeping a winning streak going!
What made me think of writing this is watching Coach Haley of the Chiefs on J.B.s sports tonight. Ever since he came up to the podium for the first time, he's had that three-day growth of beard on his face. It never changes, so it must mean he keeps it looking that way.. Now take Trey Hillman. Here's a manager who's seen the ups and downs of this passing baseball season, and his hirsute adornments have been all over the map. There's Trey with a beard.. now Trey's clean shaven.. oh, Trey's got a stash.. now he's tacked on a goatee. If I had some extra time, I should research and write up some stats on Trey's and the Royals record when he's all shaved up nice and clean, and their winning-losing record when he's got the beard.
It's too late for Trey, but Todd's just getting started. Whaddya think about Todd growing a beard until the Chiefs win? Or staying clean-faced every time they win? Sharpen up your thoughts on "beard or no beard" and let me know what look you'd like to see for Coach Haley. I mean, gosh, right now he looks like an Oakland Raider!! Ugggh!! Ralph
