580 Radio's Raubin Pierce announced his nomination for Topeka Planning Commission at the start of his program Tuesday. He says council members plan to consider his and all the nominations at the end of the month. Pierce's "candidacy" is solidly backed by the Mayor. I'm offering some reasons why..
Raubin, and then the co-host chosen to join him several years ago, Megan Mosack, have ruled the roost on WIBW Radio for years in the 11am-2pm time slot. There are two divided camps on their program.. one group that sees them as anti-Topeka; "can't you say anything good about Topeka?" This group, including many government and community leaders, are not inclined to listen to the show at all. R&M's second group is made up of very loyal fans, who cheer on their vigilant watchdog pursuit of stories about city government wasting your tax dollars.
Now, enter putting Raubin Pierce on the Planning Commission.
The council member who nominated him made a shrewd move. This raises some very interesting scenarios. An old saying reminds us to "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer." Raubin's seating on the Planning Commission finally gives him a chance to do something to solve the problems he complains about. But is that his job as a radio host? The council may put him to the test to soften up his stands on issues he may have a voice on. Raubin may also come to the mike with some closely guarded information from the Planning Commission that he may, or may not want to share on the air. I know he'll still be tough.
Partner Megan Mosack's experience serving with Joe Ledbetter on the Zoo Oversight panel is well known, and was also mentioned on the program Tuesday. Megan reminded us again that after joining the group and preparing a report on improving the zoo and its facilities, their report was tossed in the can and ignored.
Now that Raubin's being recruited into city service, let me know if you'd support his nomination.. if you were on the council, would you vote YES for Raubin Pierce, or just send him back to WIBW and Huntoon Hill to watch over City Hall from a distance? RH
