CBS has informed us this week we're down to the final six weeks of the famed "Guiding Light" on the air on radio and television for 72 years! Now they're going for what I call a game show/ daytime drama sandwich. They're putting another one-hour network game show in GL's time slot. It's the show Monty Hall made famous.. "Let's Make a Deal." The show has never been on CBS before, following years and years on each of the other two networks. And they're sending in Wayne Brady to host it.. only the 4th black host of a nationally televised game show host I can ever recall. This is one exclusive club!
Adam Wade was America's first black game show host, starring in "Musical Chairs" after "Match Game" in 1975, a very bold move at that time.. He was excellent. (Adam still appears today.. he's the gray-haired veteran at a family reunion talking about his insurance from Colonial Penn Life in that commercial.) Naturally, you'd think Nipsey Russell was a game show host, and he was, with his kids chat program "Juvenile Jury" 25 years ago. And of course, the one and only Bill Cosby tried his hand hosting "You Bet Your Life" which we carried on WIBW for a year after "The Cosby Show" went off the air.
Now here comes Wayne Brady to fill the shoes of the hard-to-imitate Monty Hall on this show. So we'll start with Drew Carey, go to Young and the Restless, Bold and Beautiful, and As the World Turns, before this "new Deal" premieres October 5th. (Guiding Light airs its final episode September 18th.)
Will you miss "GL" or are you up for a little deal making? Because doors Number 1.. 2.. and 3 are coming back.. Ralph
