I'm normally known as Ralph Hipp, 13 News around here.. but I'm also Ralph Harrison Hipp, University of Florida Graduate of December, 1975. Those of us who graduated from UF are collectively known as "The Gator Nation." And the NATION is ecstatic that our beloved Florida Gators are back in the game for another National Championship. During the 70s, none of us ever dreamed Florida would be on the scale of a Penn State or Notre Dame in football, or Duke or North Carolina in basketball. Now UF is competing for its 3rd National Championship in football, after its 2nd hoops title in March Madness. Now let me talk about our esteemed opponent, the Oklahoma Sooners..
The BCS computers matched us up with Alabama last weekend, with UF finishing its 12-1 season with a 31-20 win over 'Bama.. Florida finished within two points of a perfect season. (UF's only loss was 31-30 to Ole Miss on a blocked extra point. That's when our team changed.)
Right after Florida's win over Alabama (on WIBW-TV Saturday afternoon, I might add..) it was on to Arrowhead for that dismal game with Oklahoma and Mizzou. Brent Musberger's only pitch to keeping people watching the game was mentioning Oklahoma's amazing string of five games with at least 60 points! They finished a 700-point season on offense! While Texas deserves a shot at the title, too.. OU's offensive output this season has been spectacular. Oklahoma is coached by former Gator Assistant Coach Bob Stoops, who worked with the ole ball coach, Steve Spurrier.
There's no doubt the Alabama-Florida game was a thriller, and the SEC lucked out because the two division winners are evenly matched. Not so for the Big 12, obviously.. and that's where I could suggest change.
Don't change the divisions.. the Big 12 has North/ South, while the SEC lines 'em up East/ West. Use those division standings to determine which team will play in which bowl. But why don't we use the BCS computer rankings to choose the teams for the Big 12 Championship, no matter which division they're in. Under the computer points system, you would have gotten your Texas/ Oklahoma matchup.. if we're using BCS rankings for the championships, I thought it would make sense to use them for the conference title game, too. There you go.. Texas, Oklahoma, problem solved.. and Mizzou would have been sitting home watching!
Go Gators! We've got a good one ready to go January 8th in Miami with the Sooners! We wish 'em luck. Ralph Hipp, UF 1975
