It could be one of the most watched shows in Topeka on Tuesday nights. No, I'm not talking about NCIS or The Unit, even though WIBW loves having those shows on. I'm talking about the Topeka City Council meetings. It's Big Brother, Survivor and The Office all wrapped up into one show. Forget the zoning requests and the monthly expenditures.. this is real life drama that affects Topekans. And pretty soon it may be cancelled. Not because of low ratings.
Deputy Mayor Jeff Preisner will suggest at Tuesday night's meeting that Cable Channel 4 discontinue broadcasting the live meetings. He says it would save the city thousands of dollars. (And with $86,000 out there to put Wanamaker back the way it was, the city can use every dollar it can get back.)
But are you starting to think they don't want us watching them, or having radio commentators making fun of them? After all, Raubin Pierce recorded some hilarious audio from Channel 4 of a discussion Preisner had in the hallway with planning commission hopeful Carol Torrence. Then it gets played over and over and over.. Did that raise his hackles? Is Brett Blackburn tired of having Topekans watch every move he makes in the chamber? Does Lana Kennedy want us to stop counting how many times she walks in and out of the room?
Maybe they are just trying to save money. Let me know what you think. And if there's no televised city council on Tuesday nights, maybe you can check of some of the shows we've got on 13. Channel 4 could be playing Muzak all the time pretty soon. Ralph
