If you've been following our coverage the past two days, I think you know what a situation the city has created on its lucrative retail and restaurant corridor, Wanamaker Road. Council members were asking if city public works notified them, or even needed their permission to okay the median project that's already started. Since last week, Wanamaker has been filled with plastic traffic cones and the sounds of jackhammers. And it is a work in progress. Next up today on the story.. whether the city will alter the plan to allow for islands that can let the drivers through in some spots.. instead of the median from 17th to WalMart.
I've got an even bigger question.. why the heck are the doing all this now? Why couldn't they start last spring? Can you imagine the mess the merchants are in for during the holiday shopping season? The economy's in the tank, this Christmas could make or break a lot of them.. and now the managers/owners are wondering if the City of Topeka is blocking shoppers from coming into their stores.
Crews at work on Wanamaker Road
Would you still shop on Wanamaker in November and December if the traffic gets more congested? Or do you think they'll get the work done in time? (That is, if they figure out what they want to do...) Ralph
