John McCain started it. He's proposing the idea of a federal gas tax holiday between Memorial Day and Labor Day to give us all a break on those **** high gasoline prices. With Topeka's gas prices around $3.50 a gallon, it's tempting. Under his plan, families could subtract about 18 cents off the price of every gallon of gasoline they buy during the summer. McCain's idea gives irate truckers a little bigger break.. nearly 25 cents on every gallon of diesel they pump into their rigs. USA TODAY says the gas-tax proposal could save motorists $6.8 billion in summertime taxes.
Now I check in with AAA Kansas. Chief Jim Hanni says the McCain idea is a bad one. It could strap Kansas of federal highway dollars that would maintain and repair a road system that is already in the hole for money from Washington. Hanni says they're more in favor of having the highways for motorists to travel on.. than saving them money for summer vacations. Then it's on to Barack Obama's criticism of the McCain tax holiday. Obama says it's just not worth it to give American families what would amount to about $200 dollars in summertime travel or budget money. He's also worried that any price cut would be short lived, then the high prices would spike back up.
Now it's your turn! Do you like the McCain idea.. of dropping your gas prices by about 20 cents a gallon for a while? Or is it a band aid approach to a much bigger problem? Fill 'er up on your comments. RH
