Whew! That was a close one. But hand it to Bill Self, he's had the most fun week of his life. Set to sign that new long-term contract with KU, we've all gotta celebrate the icing on the cake to a week Hawks fans will never forget. An energetic performance in the NCAA Tournament, capped off with the championship! (See Sports Illustrated this week for details.) Self says the speculation about Oklahoma State making him a 10-year, multi-million dollar offer was "never a distraction" to him or the players in tournament time.
Self will be smiling for years to come at KU, and the Hawks couldn't have done it with T. Boone Pickens. When a coach reaches that level of success, someone must forward to up the ante. OSU's best benefactor did that BEFORE the Final Four. He is the major player and the top hero is raising Bill Self's stock. Without Pickens overtures to Bill, his salary level, level of commitment, and the length of his stay could have been a lot less. I think we owe a debt of gratitude to Pickens for showing us all what kind of coach KU has.
