I didn't give a whole lot of thought to the sports radio talk show blabbing and blogging about whether there's a basketball's chance in H*** that Bill Self will leave KU for greener pastures at his alma mater, Oklahoma State. But I'm getting a lot more concerned some 24 hours after Kansas' National Championship win over Memphis. Bill Self is meeting with the Chancellor and the A.D. I think a lot of us are confident they're going to do right by this man who rolled in from Illinois 5 seasons ago.. and did what Roy Williams wasn't able to do in 15. Deliver the championship hardware.
When I hear numbers like $40 million over 10 years being tossed around.. that Bill Self is not the highest paid hoops coach in the Big 12 (Rick Barnes of Texas is..) and that Self is really going to make KU prove that Lawrence can give him "years of security" as his reward.. it's starting to make me think twice. Self has brought the Big 12 its first men's basketball national title since the conference was expanded from the Big 8. Mark Mangino hit for the big score last season, and his lucrative contract bore Orange fruit this season. Kansas football and men's basketball players delivered 49 wins to the program in the past season.
The numbers of success are there. But are there enough KU alums to match the dollars of OSU's big alum.. T. Boone Pickens?
Bill Self's not leaving Kansas already. Is he? RH
