I have had a smile on my face ever since Jim Ogle gave us the news that some new proposals are being considered in the WIBW-COX negotiations. With no cable blackout this week.. 13 NEWS is on cable (Channel 12 here in Topeka) for at least another week. I think (through intuition, more than information) that we're going to reach a solid deal in the next 7 days, and that dreaded cable blackout we've worried about will never happen. But thoughts of dusting off "rabbit ears" and TV antennas put a smile on my face for other reasons.
You know, it wasn't really that long ago that I was the wiry teenager with a strong enough grip to grab my the pole on my grandmother's television antenna. They'd send me from her living room outside to turn the antenna. My job after "The Ed Sullivan Show" on Sunday nights was to look up, and turn the antenna from north to south so we could pick up the signal for "Bonanza." They'd leave the door open for me so they could yell "OKAY!" "NO TURN IT BACK!" "THAT'S GOOD!" to get a great, clear, color picture of Hoss and Little Joe ridin' up to the ridge of the Ponderosa to start the show. After "What's My Line?" on the channel to our north, it was time to head home and get ready for school the next day.
Was it really so long ago? The Cox debate gave me a major flashback this week, of tuning my antenna to pick up WIBW. I've kinda got mixed feelings about all this. I was actually looking forward to the old days. But boy, I join you, too.. I sure would hate to lose my cable!! Stay tuned next Friday as Melissa and I keep track of whether we're in a "blackout" or "back on!" RH
