I don't know if it's from doing Good Kids stories on 13 News, or being a solid family guy.. but everytime an outstanding teen like Cameron Bickford is killed in a wreck, a little piece of my heart breaks, too. I can only imagine the grief those of you in Valley Falls are feeling right now. I have also considered this tragedy in a different light, after reading that Cameron's brother Brandon died nearly 7 years ago of Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
Hearing about this double tragedy for the Bickfords, I recalled a time growing up as a young teen in Gainesville, Florida.. and reading that John and Eric Marvel had both been killed in a split second as they both kneeled on the side of the road helping an elderly woman fix a flat tire. Our town grieved for both of them. As I became a high schooler, I knew their surviving brother, Dan.. but not well enough to tell him how sorry I was that he had lost both of his brothers in the same night.
There are also my cousins, Steve and Marty. Steve was killed in an accidental shooting at a Marine base in California back in 1976. I happened to be visiting my aunt and his mom the night he died. Steve's death was a close memory when his brother (my cousin Marty) died after heart surgery about two years ago. One of their brothers is also named Dan.. one of my closest cousins.. and sometimes the overwhelming thoughts of the deaths of his two brothers is just something he can't get away from.
Through these tough times I still remember, I just wanted all of you in Valley Falls to know I am so sorry for your pain. Please blog me and tell me more about what a wonderful young man Cameron was. I would be glad to give him the glory here. RH
