The Real Story Behind Darnell Jackson's Success

Being a life-long basketball fan, this season has been very fulfilling.  We have numerous high school state champions.  Both Washburn and Emporia State teams have had success. And Kansas State has made a statement  with its men's and women's teams.  But once again, the Jayhawks seem to be taking center stage with another title by a seemingly endless supply of "stars".

One player in particular has caught my attention....Darnell Jackson.  Although his numbers aren't Michael Beasley-like, he made his presence felt every game this season.  Jackson has always been a talented player,  but what turned this good Oklahoma high school player into what many national analysts are calling the most improved player in the nation?

Then, like a Shaquille O'Neal free throw, it hit me like a brick.  Darnell Jackson was a guest at the Bob Chipman basketball camp a couple of years ago.  I'm not giving all of the credit to Chip, though.  Sure he's a great coach, but I believe it was an impromptu one-on-one game he set up that was the turning point for Darnell.

There it was...6'8" Darnell Jackson vs. a TV news photographer who will remain nameless. (oh, the heck with anonymity...it was me.)

I feel in those few minutes I was able to teach him the skills I've gained through years of sitting on the sofa watching ball games.  I think it is pretty obvious that I sculpted him into what he is today....a legitimate NBA prospect (I just hope he remembers me when he signs that contract.)

As you watch the video of this one-on-one showdown, notice how I make myself look old, slow and untalented...all in an attempt to build his confidence.  And all of the missed shots???  Another lesson..... patience.

I like to feel that Darnell came out of the experience a better player, and if you look at the stats...it's hard to argue.  I'm one heck of a good coach.  (Note to Coach Self: I'm available after my regular shift for one-on-one work for the rest of the team.)

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Hey ya need to stick to what you know best camera. I mean for real--The credit goes to KU staff and Darnell. Darnell is very enjoyable to watch. He has had many tragedies within the past few years that he has overcome in his life. Tragedies tend to make us stronger individuals in the long run. Chipman has been a long time family friend of ours for years. He is also an awesome coach and deserves more recognition than he gets. But it was an entertaining video. MARCH MADNESS IS SOON UPON US!!! ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK GO KU!!! Anonymous

response: You're right...Darnell has worked really hard to improve his game, but can't I get even a little credit????
