| I'm dealing with a lot of frustrated parents regarding how to deal with threats made at school. Several weeks ago, a threat of a kid going to shoot students at Washburn Rural High School led to half the student body not going to classes.....the danger spread via text messaging. Just this week, Seaman saw a sophomore student allegedly threaten as many as 21 other kids by drawing stick figures and a gunman pointing a gun at them. Some parents of the threatened kids say the district needed to do more to assure them their kids are safe and the alleged threat is being dealt with. School officials want to react responsibly, after Virginia Tech and Columbine.....but they also are aware many threats are just words put out by troubled, but not dangerous, kids. And the Schools are also restricted legally as to what they can do to a student in a threat incident. What if DA Robert Hecht decides a criminal charge is not warranted against the Seaman student and he goes back to classes after his suspension? Do all our local schools have a written Emergency Response Plan. I have the one used by USD 501, dated October 07. It deals with threats by students, bomb threats, hostage situations, bio hazards, lock downs, explosions, severe weather.....the whole gamut. What do my bloggers think? If you were the superintendent of a high school or middle school, and you knew you were going to get 4-5 student against student threats a year.....and all of your past threats have been bogus, how would you deal with it the next time you get one? |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=457KMceLrxw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR0tNJyVXDg these are the same fews student, whom attends carver! 1. This video was captured after school officials and students denied any acts of violence, The teacher’s car was damaged, he was hit with a book, a female students threw four desks at him, the teacher also found two (2) loaded hand gun and one knife during his gym class. Lets not forget the to the use of drugs and controlled substances. 2. The teacher filed several arrest affidavits and school officials and security are unable to locate the paper work now and they are denying that certain student where involved in the attack. 3. The teacher is currently on administrative leave, because of how he was able to prove his claims of violence. Fews Alternative School , Montgomery Alabama Posted by: Dustin Location: Emporia Here is a school with an excellent plan for dealing with school violence: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,404721,00.html Posted by: Jodi Location: Overbrook This happened to my son just last week at Overbrook Attendance Center. So the response from Vicki T and the answer of smaller schools isn't necessarily the case. I would like to see a story educating parents on talking to their kids and letting them know the consequences of what COULD happen to them...regardless of their age. Juvenile detention, being sued, etc. I feel as though the child that threatened my son got a slap on the wrist. School officials assure me this isn't the case..but won't give me any other information. My child and his best friend are now scared to go to school for fear of this other child. This shouldn't happen. More should have been done with this child. Bogus or not....we don't know what these children are thinking and shouldn't be taken lightly. I agree with Elaine...we don't want more VT, Columbine instances here in Kansas or anywhere else. Posted by: David Location: topeka The one and only way to put a stop to this is for the parents to start being parents especially when the child is displaying hostile tendacies eithe at home or school or in public, and not just say he/she will grow out of it. Most may if caught and talked with or gotten help. But longer agressiveness is ignored the worst it will grow. Look at what is/or will happen in Florida those teens are going to be sent for their agressive behavior and their attitude towards what they did. STOP IT before lives are lost. Posted by: VickiT Location: Topeka I think the answer is smaller schools. With technology they way it is the giant warehouse idea of schools is obsolete and dangerous. Kids that need special attentio get lost in the shuffle and kids that don't get bored waiting for the others to catch up. As odd as it sounds, I believe we need to re-explore the idea of the one room school house. Educate them in a smaller atmosphere. You could still have big group sports and recreation if you wanted but let the students that live together in the community learn together in the community. Posted by: Elaine Location: Topeka Sir, it matters not whether the threats were "bogus" or not...they CANNOT be taken lightly. This is a serious offense, and must be dealth with accordingly. I am dealing with a stiuation at my sons school now, and yes, protocol has been followed, but something needs to be done. Threats, drawings, throwing chairs, assulting teachers...it is all serious. And just so you know, this does not just happen in the higher grades, my son is in 5th grade, and has to deal with an out of control child daily. Makes going to school frightful, and NO child should have to go to school afraid. Things need to be done, and PARENTS SHOULD PARENT! As I stated earlier, all threats should be taken seriously, and measures taken to prevent more problems...i.e.VT , Columbine. |
