Walking among the Ruins *WITHVIDEO!

by Melissa Brunner

If you come to Greece, you can expect to find ancient ruins. Probably the most iconic would be the Acropolis, the high hill with the Parthenon on top.

Our local guide, Clio, explained that an Acropolis is actually any hill that had a water source and was protected, such as by a surrounding valley or steep cliff. This is Acropolis is actually only half the height of another in Athens, but that hill lacks water. The Parthenon is the temple dedicated to Athena and a sight never far from view in the city. Also atop the Acropolis is the Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechheion, a temple dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. What strikes me about all these structures is how people could build these beautiful monuments without the power tools and machinery on which we rely in modern times!

Check it out - it's impressive!
