I enjoy movies, but must admit I'm not a must-see-it-the-moment-it-comes-out kind of fanatic. The Oscar nominees announced today? I haven't seen any of the Best Picture nominees - it usually takes me couple years to catch up! However, I am always interested to hear who wins and what Hollywood thinks is best.
Most casual observers would likely agree that Oscar tends to go for projects that are serious or off-beat. So when I heard Melissa McCarthy earned a Best Supporting Actress nod for her work in the movie "Bridesmaids," I was a bit surprised. Yes, it's among the recent movies I've actually seen - on an airplane, making the guy next to me think I was quite odd laughing out loud at what might best be described as gross-out humor. It's definitely not the sort of thing upon which we're used to seeing high-browed Oscar smile!
If she wins, it would be reminiscent of Marissa Tomei's victory for "My Cousin Vinny." It's still debated whether the win was deserved.
Good comedy is tough. Why shouldn't something that makes us escape into mindless laughter be recognized as much as something that makes us cry tears of sadness or takes us to some epic depiction of historical events?
