The Kansas Travel and Tourism Division handed out prizes Tuesday to several people who opted to stay closer to home for their vacations. The Yellow Brick Road Trip program encouraged Kansans to explore destinations right in their home state, even laying out itineraries for prospective travelers.
The option wouldn't seem very attractive to many people, judging by reactions you'll get if you ask someone where in Kansas they want to vacation. "Why the heck are you going to Kansas?!" you might hear them say. But you don't have to look very hard to find some unique spots to explore. I know I have no trouble keeping my family busy when they visit from Wisconsin. We've had trips to the Topeka Zoo, Kansas History Museum, Statehouse, even headed down the highway to the Eisenhower site in Abilene. Next time, I'd love to take them to the Oz Museum and the KSU gardens. And here's hoping I make it to the Great Ball of Twine in person someday!
So let's take a moment to not bash Kansas, but celebrate it! Share your favorite sites and destinations in the Sunflower State. And if you forget what's out there, check out www.yellowbrickroadtrip.com for suggestions!
