State Agencies Going Social

Another Kansas state agency is taking to social media!

The Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment issued a news release Thursday, letting us know that it has stepped up its efforts on sites like Facebook and Twitter. Among things you'll find if you follow or friend them are health care data, stream advisories, air monitoring, childcare facilities, grant awardees and health promotion programs, as well as videos and photos from events across the state.

KDHE isn't alone. The KS Dept. of Transportation is probably tops when it comes to spreading information via Twitter. They have accounts for the various regions and I've noticed it's been a great tool for them to quickly get out the word about traffic slowdowns in construction areas, road closures due to accidents and road conditions in inclement weather. The Governor's office and various law enforcement agencies also tweet. 

Of course, much of this information has long been available on agency web sites. But, they say, they're responding to the way people are seeking information these days. Rather than surfing to various sites, they like to go to Facebook or Twitter, to find it all in one place.

What do you think? Will this make you pay more attention to what's happening? Do you think you'll 'follow' or 'friend' any of them? And is this a wise use of staff time (ie your tax dollars)? Of course, keep in mind that, in many cases, the duties have been added to an existing person's other duties.
