We're coming up on one of my favorite weekends of the year in local sports - spring sports championships. Baseball, softball, soccer and track and field championships will have students and parents, families and friends fanned out around the state Friday and Saturday. (swimming and diving was last weekend)
My first shout-out on the topic must go to AM 580 - WIBW Radio. You can't help but get excited for the young people competing when you listen to their Saturday afternoon coverage. Their home base is Wichita, where state track and field is unfolding in the background, and they circulate around the state for reports on baseball and softball. It is a great day of live sports coverage, not just for how Bruce and the gang perform, but also for giving the kids credit and just the non-traditional way it unfolds - a bit different than listening to your average football or basketball game. I always applaud their efforts.
And now I must reveal my bias - so that you can reveal your own! I'll be in Manhattan Friday (and hopefully Saturday, too!) to watch three nephews playing for Silver Lake's baseball team in the 3A competition. Meantime, my neighbor will be throwing the javelin in Wichita for the 5A boys competition. And there are lots of kids from around the area - some I've met, many I haven't - who I've been hearing and reading about over the spring.... I hope they all do well! For many, it may be their last competition as they head off to college and end their athletic careers.
Share your shout-outs! Is there anyone in particular you'll be cheering for this weekend?
Good luck to all the competitors and safe travels to all the fans....savor the moment!
