An awesome thing will happen Saturday night in neighborhoods all across the Topeka area. Neighbors will actually spend time together!
I'm half-joking in saying that. In a day and age when we often hear how neighbors just don't get to know each other anymore, people in 51 Topeka area neighborhoods have signed on to host events for the National Night Out Against Crime. That's a lot of neighbors talking - and public safety advocates will tell you that in itself can be a powerful tool in fighting crimes. Neighbors who invest themselves in each other will be more willing to speak up when something doesn't quite look right at the house across the street. If you don't feel you know a person, it's a lot easier to simply not want to get involved, even if that means the people down the street are robbed, or worse.
National Night Out Against Crime is a time for neighbors to come together and send the message that they will stand together against the bad guys. Congratulations and thank you to everyone willing to join in to make our community safer.
