The news royal watchers expected is finally official - Prince William popped the question to his long-time girlfriend, Kate Middleton. Reports are they'll be married next spring or summer.
I am just old enough that I can remember the wedding the Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer. Broadcast live, I remember thinking how beautiful she looked in that puffy gown with the long train - truly like a princess; the church bells rang as they exited the church and climbed into a horse-drawn carriage, Diana waving through the window as they passed the people lining the streets.
I wonder if the world will be as captivated by Kate and William's nuptials. Certainly, all the tabloid shows have been filled non-stop with information on who Kate is and where she comes from. Gasp! She's a commoner! And she's been a successful, career-oriented woman. How will she deal with the glare of the public eye? Will it be as tough for her as it was for Diana or has the long courtship been a blessing in easing her into it?
As you can tell, I'll have an interest in it. Not in an "I'm-so-obsessed!" sort of way, but more out of a sense of nostalgia. I remember the Chuck & Di wedding, I remember waving from the balcony with the newborn prince - and I remember the funeral with the boys walking behind the casket, topped by a spray of flowers with a card to "Mum" tucked inside. That said, a half-day into the engagement, I'm ready for all the ad nauseum coverage to stop! How about you? What's your interest? And even if you're tired of it today, will you still tune in to see the bride walk down the aisle?!
