Kudos to TPD

Big news from Topeka Police on Tuesday - while we'd heard over the weekend that they'd arrested people in connection with a string of recent burglaries, an news conference revealed the group also was accused in the fatal shooting of Natalie Gibson. Gibson was killed July 21st while pulling into her driveway in what was surmised to be a robbery gone bad.

Five adults and three juveniles are accused. Authorities say some of them have gang ties. What cracked the case? An officer picked somebody up - and that somebody started talking. Chief Ron Miller says every officer in the department worked on the case in some way. It was officers keeping their ears to the ground, listening to what people were saying and making connections. When it all comes together, justice can be served.

Let's not overlook the important role all of us can play in making certain justice is served for all victims of crime. We can be eyes and ears for the police officers. Too often, we hear police say they have a difficult time solving cases because witnesses won't come forward - there can be dozens of people around, but no one saw or heard anything. We have to be willing to speak up to keep our neighborhoods safe. Remember, you can do anonymously through Crime Stoppers. In Topeka, that number is 785-234-0007.

Be safe.
