A new season of the (altered) reality show "Survivor" kicks off this week on CBS. I've been a fan since the very first season, so, of course, I had to click today's Yahoo! headline, promising an update on all of the past winners - especially since Kansan Danni Boatwright was featured in the headline photo!
Perhaps it's a statement on how long this show has been around or how fleeting the 15 minutes of fame can be that, as I went through the list, I couldn't even remember some of these people! I got through season 1 Richard and season 2 Tina all right. And I remember season 3 Ethan. But by season 4 Vacepia, things started gettinga big foggy. Earl from season 14? Are they sure?
Going through the list got me to thinking about who I'd classify as the most memorable Survivor winner. Richard Hatch would be up there because he was the first and Danni would rank highly because of her local ties. Some of the rest remind me why I often get frustrated with the show - I mean, really, if you've watched the show and want to win, wouldn't you be smart enough to vote off Boston Rob?!
While some winners have tried to ride the wave of their fleeting fame as far as it would take them, I must say I liked reading how several simply returned to a quiet life or, if anything, used their winnings to promote a favorite charity. Remember JT? He bought houses for his siblings and paid for college for his neices and nephews!
And no matter how frustrated I've been by strategies and outcomes in recent seasons, yes, I'll still stay up late after work to watch the premiere!
