How Is THAT Fun?

by Melissa Brunner

I know everyone has their own opinions on what they find to be fun, but I guess I try to be a law-abiding citizen so I just don't understand why someone would think it's fun to destroy someone else's property.

I visited Susanna Wesley Church's summer camp today, after receiving a call that someone had shot out the windows of the bus they use to transport children to field trips and swimming lessons. It was particularly frustrating for them because it was the second time this week someone did that to their bus. The first bus actually was there, and, when they contacted Durham School Services about renting a bus while there's was in the shop, Durham graciously let them them borrow one free of charge. Their generosity was repaid with what will likely be a $5000 repair bill for a half dozen windows, a windshield and doors. The church is waiting for a repair bill of its own from the damage earlier in the week.

They tried to explain it to the kids, but, really, how do you do that? All the kids know is that because of what someone else did, they won't be going to swim lessons this week and their trip to the horse ranch won't be happening. "Please stop," 6-year old Jack responded when I asked him what he'd tell the people who did this, "because you're making us feel bad."

I feel bad, too, Jack. And maybe hearing you say that will help the people who did this realize that they didn't just break a few windows - they did something that also hurt a lot of people.
