Catching up on blogging after a few weeks off... sorry about that!
Let's start with last week's events honoring our law enforcement officers. It was an honor to be able to bring you stories honoring those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Everyone I visited with, on camera and off, was so gracious in sharing memories of their heroes. The pride and love they felt was so evident - you know their loved ones will never be forgotten.
Karen and Joe Bohlender were among those who took time to visit with us. Their son, Topeka Police Officer Joey, was killed in a helicopter crash, along with fellow officer, Jeff Howey, in June 2000. I think of them often because it happened during the week of our wedding. Their funerals were ending as our wedding rehearsal was getting underway. It's funny how life can juxtapose such tragedy and such joy.
The Bohlenders organize a memorial golf tournament every year to benefit Kansas Concerns of Police Survivors, which assists families of fallen officers. This year, the event is in memory of Officer Jeff Atherly and Corporal David Gogian, who were killed in the line of duty Dec. 16, 2012 - the first officers TPD has lost since the Bohlenders lost their son and his partner. The event is June 23rd at Lake Shawnee Golf Course. You can find information to register at www.kscops.org.
Support the cause if you can. Even better, support those who serve and protect every day by saying thanks.
