At the (Home) Movie Theater

by Melissa Brunner

I admit, I didn't sit through the entire three-plus hours (and hour-and-a-half red carpet preview) but I did catch quite a bit of the Oscar broadcast Sunday night. I saw enough to know why Angelina Jolie's leg and a best-kept-private part of Jennifer Lopez' anatomy have their own Twitter accounts today. And I did enjoy the adorable pup from The Artist getting its own seat in the theatre!

I also can tell you I haven't seen a single one of the movies that was nominated for best picture. I am interested in several of them - I just usually am several months (if not years!) behind in seeing movies. Part of it might be that I'm too cheap to go to the first-run theaters very often! I'm fortunate to have several rental options not too far from home, so, when we do decide on a whim to watch a movie on a Saturday night, we don't have to travel far.

CBS Sunday Morning did a piece on the dwindling audience at movie theaters. Cost was one response people gave to why they didn't attend movies more regularly. The other? Cell phones and other breaches of etiquette. One person asked why they would spend that much on a ticket to be distracted by people talking, texting, ringing, etc. when they could rent the movie for a buck or two and watch it on a reasonably good home entertainment system without the interruptions.

Where do movies stand in your life? And what did you think of the Oscars?
