From Australia: Sharing with Sheep

By Melissa Brunner

Meg and Jack made it look easy. With a quick whistle, they slid into the field, rounded up their charges and sent them scurrying our direction. Meg and Jack are the dogs at Tobruk Sheep Station and their "charges" were dozens of sheep that soon surrounded us, checking for food!

Tobruck is designed for tourists, but it gives a look at what the skills needed on an outback sheep station - they use the term "station" like we would use "ranch." Our guide, Dennis, not only showed us the skills of Meg and Jack, he also showed his own skills at shearing a sheep. It was amazing to see the wool come off in basically a big, fuzzy carpet! They'd let it grow a year before shearing it again.

After lunch of Aussie standards such as pumpkin soup, meat pie and Anzac biscuits, we tried our hand at whip cracking and boomarang throwing. The verdict - I'm not too skilled at either! I think I'll be keeping my day job!

It's been a quick week in the land Down Under. Time to pack and look forward to that 14-hour flight back across the ocean! While I travel, you can enjoy more pictures and another video at www.facebook.com/wibwmelissabrunner.
