From Australia: Touring Taronga

Post by: Melissa Brunner

Before our Holiday Vacations group headed off to Australia, I said all I needed was to see a koala and a karangoo! I got my wish when we spent the day at Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

The adventure started with a ferry ride across the harbor to get the zoo on Sydney's north shore. We then took a cable car ride to the "top" of the zoo. It's situated on a hill and you meander back and forth along paths, ending your tour at the bottom of the hill.

Yes, I got to spot kanagaroos and koalas - and wallabies and wombats and seals and sea lions and all sorts of native birds! We also got to see elephants playing soccer and bears and a crocodile! A couple of neat things happened on our walk back down to ride the ferry back across the harbor. First, we happened to be looking at one of the sea lions when the keeper came with a bucket of fish for feeding time - it was like getting our own personal show as she tossed him fish and answered my questions about the process! Then, in the gift shop (which you must walk through to exit!), another sea lion's tank has its glass wall visible to the gift shop. That guy would come down and sit against the window and just watch the people in the gift shop. It was as though we were his big screen tv!

Again, apologies for not figuring out my temperamental connection to post pics directly here, but you can find them at

www.facebook.com/wibwmelissabrunner. You'll want to see the video I've posted there, too! It includes a bit from the sea lion show and the open flight bird show.

Enjoy!
