It's a day that makes you tired and exhilerated at the same time.

Northeast Kansas outdid itself once again with the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon! The $242,247 figure on the tote board at the end of the day was absolutely amazing!!

Running around all day, I only had time to snap a few pics with my cell phone, but it allows me share with you the faces your donations will help. Check out more behind-the-scenes pics under the WIBW section of Capture Kansas.

9-year old Clayton from Manhattan so wanted to help - and I think we have a future co-host in the making! Clayton has Duchenne, which means his muscles will get progressively weaker. But MDA research has launched the first human trials on gene therapy that shows promise in getting the body to ignore the defective genes, so our hope is Clayton won't have to slow down!

4-year old Abigail is from Blue Rapids. This was my first time meeting her and what a sweetheart she is! Abby has Charcot Marie Tooth disease. The severity of muscle weakness it creates can vary greatly. MDA recently launched focus support on this condition. Here's hoping it keeps Abby strong!

Our buddy, A.J. lives in Topeka. He has Fredricks Axtaxia. He was busy helping his mom with the behind-the-scenes pledge processing work. Oh - and he's a huge WWE fan!

18-year old Brock graduated from high school last year and was Bern's homecoming king last year. He's a KU fan, much to the annoyance of photog Eric!

18-year old Sarah lives in Topeka and is my long-time friend. We picked out our dresses together - Sarah wanted to find me something pink and we succeeded!

Great volunteers from the Topeka Civitan Club took the first shift on the phone bank again, which means they were there at 6am!

The lovely Loran from Burlington! She also has Fredricks. She's a busy lady, working two jobs!

These cute things? They lasted about three hours into the day!

Congratulations on raising $242,247 on the Topeka MDA Telethon. I was born in Olathe, KS on July 30, 1960. Talk to you in 2010.

Reading some of the comments re: MDA I can only share our experience - my son has ALS and they have been a constant source of help for his needs; this includes (over the years)two wheelchairs, something no family can afford without assistance. The organization may not be perfect but I know it has been a blessing for our family. Thanks for all you do raise funds for families in need!

Thanks Melissa and Ralph for another great Telethon. I miss working it but do watch most of it at home, times do change. It will be 10 years Sunday that Scott died. Time goes so fast. Scott was diagnosis with MD in 1978, research has come so far in that time, not soon enough for Scott but will for some other kids soon. It is because of you and Ralph that we have had such great years to raise lots of money for all of the patients. Thank you both. Happy Birthday to you on Saturday.

RESPONSE: Our fingers are crossed for the day when there is a cure and our efforts will no longer be needed. I missed having you there, but you know you're always in my heart!

Thanks for a great job. How many dresses did you have, and were they yours or donated ?

RESPONSE: Thanks! I wore one dress Sunday night, and had four for Monday. The reason? A change of clothing gives me a new burst of energy! This year, the dresses were all mine. My secret is to keep an eye on clearance racks throughout the year, so I find some great deals!

Melissa, I look forward every year to watching you and Ralph encourage Kansas to dig deep and give. My own children used to go out every year( in the 70's), take a coffee can with a paper taped to it "MDA" and make the 'rounds of the neighborhood' and then we'd take it out to White Lakes and give it to them!! It always made us feel good that we were able to help in that little way. Keep up the good work, your whole team. You do an awesome job every year.

RESPONSE: Thanks! And how great that MDA could help instill that early sense of community in your kids. Way to go!!

Melissa, you guys did a wonderful job.I was wondering how david ? was doing.I seen him last year at mda but didnt see him this year

RESPONSE: Thanks. May I ask which David you're asking about? Our former co-worker, David Oliver, co-hosted the telethon in Springfield, MO again this year and is doing well.
