NFL quarterback Brett Favre confirmed today that he will retire from the New York Jets. And I'm already hearing the jokes! Will he really stay retired this time? Can he resist the temptation to return?
I don't know the answer, but I do hope the whole on-again, off-again situation with whether he's leaving the pro game doesn't diminish his contribution to the sport. I lived in Green Bay during Favre's "glory years," and my visits home over the past year don't lead me to believe fans there hold a grudge. After all, this is the town that went ahead with naming a street for former coach Mike Holmgren after he bolted for Seattle! I've said before that what Favre gave fans beyond his skills was the joy of watching a player with obvious love and passion for his sport - that wry grin even after he'd mess up.
So share your speculation. Is his career on the field really over? If not, where would you like to see him go? Should he go? It's the same discussion we've been having for several years now - maybe this one last time!
