Meeting "Miracle Mason" - Behind the Scenes!

Whoever said, "Never work with children or animals," might have had Mason Deitcher in mind! The precocious three-and-a-half year old and his family are the ambassadors for this year's March of Dimes Signature Chefs Gala. Photographer Jovarie and I visited their home one evening to do a profile for a To Your Health segment. Mom Tiffany, Dad Eric and Big Brother Zac were wonderful, but Mason was a one-man welcoming committee - and one who didn't want to sit still! The family loves Halloween - and Mason wanted to be sure we caught all the decorations! We settled in for the interview - and Mason decided it would be better to check out his bedroom! When I interviewed Tiffany, I had Mason crawl up on my lap and "take notes." I captured a few pictures to share some of these memorable moments. Truth be told, I didn't mind any of it one little bit! I had a blast - and it's all a reminder of the great work done by the doctors and nurses at Stormont-Vail's Neonatal Intensive Care and by organizations like the March of Dimes. Mason was born 11 weeks early, weighing in at 3.5 pounds. Today, he's a perfectly normal, extremely active child! The Deitchers will be at the Signature Chefs Gala Thursday, October 30th from 6 to 9 pm at the Ramada Inn in Downtown Topeka. You can join the effort to give all kids a healthy start in life. Tickets are $50 each or $80 for two. Visit to reserve yours.

Mason shows off one of his Halloween decorations. It played the Addams Family theme - not bad here, but when he kicked it in during the interview, mom had to hide it for a while!

Mason shows me the miniature pumpkins he picked up with his mom and brother - they'd been on the other side of the room!

Mason shows Photog Jovarie his room - and his coloring book stash!

Mason check out the microphone dad's wearing, while big brother Zac tries to hold back laughter!
