As someone commented when I arrived at work today, "I guess you don't really ask if it was a nice funeral." But it was a nice few days to remember my Grandma Brunner - lots of stories and pictures and flowers. It was also nice to see all my cousins - and all their children! They added it up for the obituary, and Grandma had 28 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. I have no trouble with the number of grandchildren - growing up, we had huge extended family gatherings for Christmas - all the aunts and uncles and cousins would get together, so I knew all my cousins pretty well - from Sarah's U2 obsession, to Molly's soccer exploits and little Elizabeth toddling around the yard. But today, my knowledge of my cousins is all minus 12 years - I haven't seen them much since I moved to Kansas, just get updates from my mom. To see Sarah with her seven-year old daughter and meet Molly's fiance (when did she grow up? and yes, I called her one of her sisters' names first!) and have Elizabeth tell me she's now 14-years old was a bit surreal! In that respect, it was a nice funeral - all the family together laughing and sharing - just what Grandma would have loved.
