SSG 10k Training Log: It's Race Week!
We're in the home stretch now! The Sunflower State Games Governor's Cup 10k is this Friday night - my first 10k ever! Thanks to everyone for voicing their support along the way - all my  blog and chat friends are great! Also, a big thanks to Tony Estes of Fitness in Training for sharing his advice and letting me pass it along to all of you. I'm pretty confident in making the distance, but I'm not sure what my time will be. As someone pointed out, since I've never run a 10k before, whatever I do will be a personal best! My conservative goal is 55 minutes - that's nine-minute miles, and I certainly think I'm capable of that. Beyond that, we'll see! If any of you are thinking about joining in, you can register on-site at Hummer Park the night of the race from 5:30 to 6:30 pm - racetime is 7pm. You don't even have to do a 10k - there is also a 5k option. Don't want to run at all? Come on down for the Athlete's Festival and torchlighting. Music and games start at 6 pm, with the torch ceremony set for 6:30 pm, all leading up to your chance to cheer on the runners at 7! It's been fun sharing my progress with all of you, and I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

Melissa, I meant to send you a good luck message after you were on the 5pm news Friday eve, but realized you weren't at the 6pm news since you said you were leaving after the news, but I was going to email you before the 5pm news as I thought you would still be there for that news, anyway CONGRATULATIONS on your 2nd place win, that was awesome, you did a fantastic job and only 23 sec behind the 1st place winner, all of your hard work running the past several weeks paid off. I just want to congratulate you on a job well done!!!! Hope to see you on the Monday eve news so you can tell us about your run

RESPONSE: Thanks! I'll have a blog up about it before the end of the day. I was happy with how I did for my first one - now I know where I'm at, and can plan for the next one!

Melissa , As a retired Sgt. from the army I would say that a nine-minute mile is a good goal to have. As I recall most company runs were nine-minute miles .So good luck.

RESPONSE: Good to hear! I know I've worked my 5k pace to me quicker than that, but I'm being realistic that this is twice as long, so I don't want to push my luck - I want to make it to the finish line!

Posted by: PS Good luck Mellisa!!! Looking forward to the pics!

RESPONSE: I think my husband will be on photo duty!
