All A-Twitter!
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not hip to all the latest and greatest tools the internet has to offer. I defer to the much-closer-to-college-aged and tech-junkie coworkers I have around me! (and I mean that with a lot of love and respect!) The social networking sites are a great way to keep in touch with friends, viewers and professional contacts, they say. That's why you might notice most of us now have Facebook pages. Check them out and become our friends! The other item most of us now have is a Twitter account. (www.twitter.com) It's a lot like the "status" on Facebook, you can update it several times a day and entries are limited to 120 characters (they're called 'tweets'). The premise is you answer the question, "What am I doing right now?" That's it. From a social standpoint, you'll get a lot of the mundane - "Finished a load of laundry." "Had a burrito for dinner." But in the news industry, Twitter can be used as a way to give you quick updates on the latest points in a breaking or developing story. For example, during the recent incident in Wamego when they thought three teens were missing in the river, the reporter on the scene and those of us in the newsroom provided continues "tweets" with the latest information we were getting. News headlines from our web channel are fed into Twitter throughout the day, along with our blogs. I'll frequently "tweet" items that we'll have coming up on the news or news releases that just came into my email. Oh - and I do add some of the more "glamorous" details from the newsroom - like the fact that I got a cup of coffee before sitting down to write this! Sign on just for fun -- just create an account, and find who you want to follow. You don't have to "tweet" if you don't want to. You can search "wibw" to find those of us who are on it, or search your town for other people you might know. I look forward to having you follow me!

Melissa, how do we follow the wibw tweets?? I'm a newbie to twitter. I remember Rhiannon & Candice talking about it but just recently joined. THANKS

RESPONSE: Rather than use "find and follow," just put "WIBW" in the search box - all of us who have accounts will come up. Then click the "follow" button next to the names of those you want to follow, and you'll be set!

Enjoy following your tweets along with the rest of the WIBW staff. I think it is a great way to report information but also to gather information about a story. I certainly foresee a time when you will get a story from us because we see it happen and it will be through Twitter that the news media will become aware of it. Keep up the great work and oh yeah, have a great run this weekend.

RESPONSE: Thanks! I appreciate your support - and your interest in the tweets!
